A car named after a tourbillon

Every previous flagship bore the name of a legendary driver — Veyron, Chiron. This time, we set that tradition aside.

Tourbillon is a French word: in 1801, a Swiss-born genius living in France invented the tourbillon, a mechanism that rotates to counteract the effects of gravity on timekeeping. More than two centuries later, it remains the pinnacle of watchmaking. A mechanism born to defeat time — that is the character of this car: mechanical timelessness.

115 years of heritage, 20 years of hyper sports car experience. Type 57 SC Atlantic (beauty), Type 35 (performance) and Type 41 Royale (luxury) form the blueprint; two mantras of Ettore Bugatti guided everything — "if comparable it is no longer Bugatti" and "nothing is too beautiful". Our goal: that it still stands with grace on the concours lawns in ten years, in a hundred.

Four elements shaped by speed, and a philosophy from the 1930s.

Shaped by Speed

"Shaped by Speed" is the first principle of the design. To cruise serenely beyond 400 km/h, every surface and every intake must earn its existence.

The pivotal step: the V16 is placed behind and below the front axle — the nose, the roof and the seating position all drop. This philosophy, inherited from the Type 35 of the 1930s (in French, Surbaissé — "lowered"), makes the Tourbillon 4 cm narrower than its predecessor with a lower profile. Four elements define its identity — the horseshoe grille, the Bugatti Line, the central spine and the two-tone split — every detail in the service of aerodynamics.

SURBAISSÉ

Lowered

Emulating the submerged chassis of early Surbaissé Bugatti models, the marque has lowered the seating. Narrowed and 4 cm lower than its predecessor, the Tourbillon has achieved a superior aerodynamic profile.

Four elements, instantly Bugatti.The lower, wider horseshoe grille; the Bugatti Line from the Type 41 Royale; the central spine from the Type 57 SC Atlantic (integrating the third brake light); the two-tone split of the body. Chief exterior designer Jan Schmid's favourite: the rear fender, whose proportions pay direct homage to the Veyron.

Headlights that breathe.The headlights sit on "flying fenders", channelling air past the lamps into the side radiators; cooling air exits through the front hood, adding downforce. Between the two central radiators sits a generous front trunk.

A cabin without screens — a mechanical watch you can drive.

A cabin without screens

"A century-old timepiece can still be worn today." This maxim defines the cabin philosophy — horology and the digital age, in reconciliation. Technology dates a car; screens especially. So we hide the screens and craft the instruments as a mechanical work of art.

Horology, not screens

Developed in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Concepto and assembled by hand, the cluster comprises more than 650 components — a "car within a car": rubies as bearings, gears designed solely for this car, machined aluminium hands. Tolerances of 50 microns, down to 5; a weight of just 700 grams. Finishes such as Clous de Paris or guilloché are available — just like commissioning a watch.

The rim rotates freely around the central airbag, with paddle shifters and controls integrated into the seamless wheel — the cluster is always clearly visible, at any steering angle.

Hidden display

The Hidden Display

The reversing camera deploys in just 2 seconds in portrait, 5 in landscape; when not in use, it does not exist. The console is crystal glass developed over 13 steps, with anodised, milled aluminium. Ignition is a physical ritual — a pull to start, a push to cease.

Fixed seats and pedal box

Maximum Performance. Ultimate Comfort.

To allow for the lowest seating position and lightest design, the seats are fixed directly to the floor, with the pedals and steering wheel adjustable — inspired by top-tier motorsport, balanced for daily ease. The audio system uses exciters to drive the panels themselves: lighter, more efficient.

From titanium to wood, from cashmere to sapphire, every material is pure and authentic. Dedicated fabrics for the seats and door panels, with a horizontal two-tone split, form a cabin of "car couture"; the exterior spine extends inside as the central divider.

Powertrain

The purity of natural aspiration, the agility of electrons — in concert.

1,000 hp, without a single turbocharger

CTO Emilio Scervo says the team evaluated rebuilding the W16, pure electric and hybrid options — and chose the hardest path: a powertrain created from scratch.

The Veyron needed 8.0 litres and four turbochargers for 1,001 hp; this 8.3-litre V16 reaches one thousand horses naturally aspirated. Flat out to the 9,000 rpm redline, the sound of natural aspiration is spine-tingling — a purity no turbo can offer. The electric motors add 800 hp: 1,800 in total, in a car lighter than the Chiron.

The invisible engineering

The Tourbillon cruises serenely beyond 400 km/h. Inspired by the majestic peregrine falcon, the streamlined profile is at once geared for incredible speed and immense downforce — the top speed is achieved without the need for a raised rear wing.

Every intake has a reason. No opening is decoration — this is the full meaning of "shaped by speed".

At top speed, the wing stays stowed

New technology achieves a perfect balance of forces: the rear wing remains stowed at top speed, provides greater downforce at lower speeds, and becomes an air brake under braking — the source of that serene 400+ km/h cruise.

Crash structure within the diffuser

The diffuser climbs from beneath the cabin at an ideal angle, extending nearly half the car's length; two 3D-printed metal structures are integrated within it to absorb energy — efficient, discreet, enabling the open rear design.

Cooling and downforce, in the same breath

Eight radiators each have their role: air enters through the horseshoe grille, cooling the front e-axle, battery and brakes, then exits through the front hood — adding downforce along the way.

Beauty underneath

Powertrain programme

The journey begins

In 2021, Mate Rimac made initial contact with Cosworth and the development journey of an entirely new powertrain began. A four-cylinder mule engine first confirmed the performance, sound and overall character.

Design freeze

Design frozen

The design proposal was presented to the board: the brand's identity reimagined around the new hybrid V16 for the first time since the Veyron. From there, engineering development proceeded in full.

V16 first fire

The V16 fires

The first complete 8.3-litre V16 was ready for testing on the dyno — measuring nearly a metre in length, delivering 1,000 hp at a 9,000 rpm redline. The naturally aspirated era was reborn.

Virtual development

Virtual development

Bench data and suspension kinematics feed a virtual model — more than three years of simulation, ahead of any physical prototype. The simulator reproduces the Nürburgring and Nardò, with 100% repeatable data.

Platform and integration

Platform and integration

The all-new platform takes shape: front e-axle, central T-shaped battery as a structural part, the V16 brought closer to the driver; the inclined V16 lets the diffuser extend nearly half the car's length, with 3D-printed aerofoil suspension arms.

Validation phase

Validation

Tire validation at Michelin's Ladoux facility (summer 2025), two winter windows in Arjeplog (2025/2026), and high-speed testing at Nardò to correlate the simulation — the virtual model and the physical car, continuously cross-validated.
